If you're on a high-speed cable, DSL, or FIOS Internet service, then we don't need to tell you how much better it is than dial-up service. Once you try broadband, dial-up is never the same.

But did you know that you can network all of the computers in your household to share a single high-speed Internet connection? Just think: You won't have to listen to your kids fighting over the one computer that has a decent Internet connection.

In addition, when properly installed and configured, a shared Internet connection using an external router/firewall can prevent hackers, crackers, script kiddies, and other Internet vermin from accessing your computer via your always-on broadband connection.

Important notes:

• Residential Internet connection sharing may be used only to connect computers that are used by members of the same family or household.

• A few broadband companies don't allow their connections to be shared (most do allow it, however). It is the customer's responsibility to ascertain whether doing so will violate their provider's terms of service.

• In any case, it is almost certain that your broadband provider will not "support" shared connections. (In other words, although they may allow or tolerate the practice, they will not help you set it up, nor will they help you troubleshoot it if it stops working.)
